Quick Look: Camelbak HAWG

Adam Teeter

The Camelbak HAWG is not a new pack; it's been around in various iterations for years. This version is one or two generations back, but when I saw the pocket layout, I knew I had to have it for EDC uses. The main compartment is large and spacious enough to handle typical folders or large books. The admin pocket is laid out well and useful for all the small items one might need. The top pocket is just right for keys and a glasses case. The hydration compartment will just barely fit my 13" MacBook Pro. The shoulder straps are wide and lightly padded and disperse the loads typical to a smaller pack well. The pack comes with upper and lower compression straps, but I removed the uppers as they slowed entry into the bag. I mounted a Cache from OV Innovations to the loops vacated by the removal and the PALS webbing on the face of the admin pouch. Speaking of PALS webbing, the HAWG has plenty of space for whatever pouches you might want to add. If you find a good buy on one of these older versions, they are definitely worth a look for smaller volume EDC roles.

Carry on everyone,
